HOLLY
Holly sat in her room later that evening with a mug of hot tea clutched between her hands. Her knees were drawn up in front of her and she was in her flannel pajamas. There was something so comforting about sitting in a bed with pillows surrounding her and drinking tea.
An audiobook played from her phone, which was sitting on the nightstand next to her. The narratorâs voice was deep and throaty. It added the perfect ambiance to the mystery that was unfolding.
She set the mug on the nightstand and sighed as she stretched out her legs. Her gaze drifted over to the Christmas trees that were still set up in her room. At first, they had been a nuisance. But she would miss their aroma and the shape of them if they were taken out now. They made her think back to her afternoon spent decorating with Isaac.
Reaching over, she paused the book. Her thoughts were wandering too much, and she was missing snippets of the story. It was probably better to take a break anyway.
Just as she settled back onto the bed, there was a knock at her door. Confused, she pulled the covers off and crossed the room. She peeked out the peephole and her breath caught in her throat.
Stephen was standing out in the hallway. He had on his coat and hat and was busy staring down the hallway at something.
It was annoying, the way her body reacted. Her heart pounded and her stomach twisted as she took in the sight of him. Sheâd almost broken down in front of him todayâand he knew about Tyler. Everything had her thoughts in a whirlwind.
She took a deep breath as she stilled her mind and pulled open the door. When his gaze met hers, her heart pounded so hard that she was pretty sure he could hear it. And then he dropped his gaze to her body and slowly moved it back up, his smile deepening with each inch he covered.
âComfy?â he asked. The amused hint to his voice made her cheeks warm even more.
âI finished all the work I needed to do today, so Iâm taking some me time.â She hoped she came across more confident than she felt.
Stephen chuckled as he tossed her a jacket. âWell, get dressed. Weâre going out. Iâll meet you downstairs.â
Holly sputtered as she watched him turn and head toward the stairs. âWait!â she called.
Stephen stopped and turned. âYeah?â
Her knees weakened from the depth of his gaze. She hated that she was reacting to him this way. It wasnât helping her at all. Falling for Stephen again would only end in heartache.
âWhere are we going?â she asked, finally finding the words. It was amazing how he could make her forget how do the simplest things, like speak.
Stephen held her gaze for a moment before his cocky smile returned. âYouâll just have to come and find out.â With that, he winked and disappeared down the stairs.
Holly blinked a few times, trying to still her heart.
